Biography
Lives in Johannesburg and works as a freelance editor. Award-winning author of short story collections and novels, most recently THE EXPLODED VIEW (SA: Random 2004; France: Editions Zoe 2007; Sweden: Tranan Forlag ^). THE RESTLESS SUPERMARKET (David Philip 2001, Holland: Contact 2005, Sweden: Tranan Forlag 2008) won the Sunday Times Fiction Award 2002 and longlisted for the IMPAC 2003.
His latest book PORTRAIT WITH KEYS was extracted in Granta and described by Geoff Dyer as: "Surely one of the most ingenious love letters - full of violence, fear, humour and cunning - ever addressed to a city. If Italo Calvino had grown up in Joburg and experienced both apartheid and its aftermath this is the kind of book he would have been proud to have written."
PORTRAIT WITH KEYS is the winner of the South African Sunday Times Alan Paton Non-Fiction Prize 2007 and the winner of the University of Johannesburg Prize 2007. It was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize 2007 and longlisted for the Warwick Prize for Writing 2008.
