Novel
Short-listed for the Commonwealth Writers Prize, First Book, 2006
Candidly and endearingly written in the first person, this is the story of nine-year-old Rebecca, known as 'Sparra', who introduces us to her family and friends. Things become rather more sinister for Sparra when she discovers a trapdoor in a derelict house, and an accident with a policeman means Sparra turns against this man in a position of authority. 198pp.
Given the context of the Toxteth riots of 1981, when angry residents were pitted against policemen, Jolliffe cleverly draws a parallel between the two incidents, to show how human nature can turn against those in positions of authority.
"Jolliffe has a good eye for the way nine-year-olds look at adults with a mix of admiration, fear and confusion." Kirkus Review.
