Biography

 

Critic, novelist, broadcaster and award winning television documentary filmmaker, currently working with BBC TV. His 2 hour documentary for PBS/Channel 4 Jihad: The Men and Ideas Behind Al Qaeda on which he was co-producer and writer, was awarded the Columbia-Dupont Award, the premier award in the USA for documentaries. He is a regular fiction reviewer for The Sunday Times.

 

He was chosen by Granta for the 1993 'Best Young British Novelists' list. His novels are BLUE FRUIT (Simon & Schuster 1988), THE BURNT HOUSE (Simon & Schuster 1989), THE SNAIL (Hutchinson 1991), SING THE BODY ELECTRIC (Chatto 1993), Non fiction works: PARLIAMENT: The Great British Democracy Swindle (Chatto 1990), DEMOCRACY IN BRITAIN: A Reader (co-editor with Jack Lively, Blackwell 1994), MASKS: Blackness, Race and the Imagination (Chatto 1998).
