DIGITAL MESSIAH

Thriller

Gil Martin (44) has made his fortune as a video games designer, but the perfect game - a mixture of visceral excitement and emotional engagement - has always eluded him. Finally, he believes he has the answer with a game called GRENDEL, in which by updating the mythic monster in Beowulf, and seeing the world through his oppressed eyes, he creates the perfect Nietzschean vision of the liberated soul. But on the verge of completion, he learns that his company is being stalked by an infamous private equity raider Bob Mancini. Gil also begins to receive unsettling texts and emails accusing him of cowardice, weakness and betrayal.

Then all hell breaks loose: Gil's daughter Elise, figurehead of a My Space cult called The Tribe collapses and goes into a coma. Someone is leaking information about GRENDEL to Mancini, and the costs of the game are spiralling, making it the most expensive game in history. Then Elise is thrown out of the hospital window, and survives. The code for GRENDEL is wiped making it impossible for Gil to deliver the game on time. But he and his team decide to fight off the takeover, despite the continued leaks coming from inside the company. In a nail-biting finale it is touch and go whether he succeeds and whether Elise survives. Finally Gil learns what really matters in life. MS available late 2007.
