Major triumph for TRIOMF
February 26, 2009
"...funny, feisty and ferociously clever." Gillian Slovo
The cinematic adaptation of Marlene van Niekerk's novel TRIOMF, which tells the story of the Benade family living in the eponymous town - a poor, white township settled on the razed, black, Sophiatown - as they prepare for the results of the first democratic election, has been released in South Africa to rave reviews.
Keeping true to the bleak, but wickedly funny source material, the film has been compared to output from the Coen brothers as well as seminal South African cinema: the much lauded Jerusalema (Ralph Ziman) and Mapantsula (Oliver Schmitz).
"Obligatory viewing"
Wilhelm Snyman, Cape Times
"...with performances as intense as these, this powerful picture must surely be seen as a triumph for Suid-Afrikaanse filmmaking."
Jeremy Kuper, Mail & Guardian
