Van Heerden, Heyns and Steinberg all winners at the Via Afrika Awards 2009

Etienne van Heerden was awarded the WA Hofmeyr Award for literature in Afrikaans 2009 for 30 NAGTE IN AMSTERDAM (English title: THIRTY NIGHTS IN AMSTERDAM). Van Heerden won the same prize for IN STEDE VAN DIE LIEFDE (English title: IN LOVE'S PLACE) in 2006. 30 NAGTE IN AMSTERDAM also won the prestigious 2009 M-Net Literary Award. Michiel Heyns' BODIES POLITIC is the winner of the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English Literature 2009. It is also currently on the South African Sunday Times Fiction Prize 2009 shortlist and was shortlisted for the University of Johannesburg Prize 2008/2009 and for the 2009 M-Net Literary Awards.
Jonny Steinberg was awarded the Recht Malan Prize 2009 for non-fiction for THREE-LETTER PLAGUE, which is also currently on the shortlist for the South African Sunday Times Alan Paton Award 2009. THREE-LETTER PLAGUE was also on the University of Johannesburg Prize 2008/09 shortlist, and was a South African Sunday Times Book of the Year 2008 as well as a Washington Post Book of the Year 2008 in the US, where it was published by Simon & Schuster under the title SIZWE'S TEST.
