Blake Friedmann Authors Star at London Book Fair

With South Africa the Country of Market Focus for the London Book Fair in April 2010, a stellar array of Blake Friedmann authors will be in London to take part in the South Africa 2010: One Nation, Many Voices programme and other events at and beyond the book fair.

The following Blake Friedmann clients will be in London and involved in various events around the capital and further afield in the UK:

Imraan Coovadia, Achmat Dangor, Mike van Graan, Etienne van Heerden, Zakes Mda, Deon Meyer, Marlene van Niekerk, Margie Orford, Henrietta Rose-Innes, Jonny Steinberg, Marita van der Vyver and Ivan Vladislavic, along with agent Isobel Dixon.

The authors will be appearing at South African Market Focus Seminars at the Book Fair itself on subjects like 'South Africa in Africa' (Zakes Mda), 'Writing Crime in South Africa' (Deon Meyer and Jonny Steinberg) and 'South Africa in Context' (Ivan Vladislavic). Achmat Dangor, Imraan Coovadia, Marlene van Niekerk and Etienne van Heerden can also be seen at the PEN Literary Café next to Foyles.

Deon Meyer will be taking part in the PEN Free the Word Festival with an event at Foyles, and Marlene van Niekerk, Jonny Steinberg, Etienne van Heerden, Ivan Vladislavic and Zakes Mda appear at various events at the British Library as part of their series focusing on South African writing.

Achmat Dangor will feature at Foyles on a panel titled 'Negotiating the Past' and together with Jonny Steinberg also appears at Marlborough House for a Commonwealth Foundation event on The Literary Landscape of HIV.
 
Further afield at the Travel Bookshop, Henrietta Rose-Innes will feature alongside Brian Chikwava; and Margie Orford and Deon Meyer will discuss South African crime fiction together.

 

Award-winning playwright Mike van Graan will be involved in the London Theatre Forum from 22-24 April, in association with the Free Word Centre and the British Council, presenting a series of London-based staged readings and discussions centering around his plays.

 

Isobel Dixon will be taking part in the Salon Shebeen evening of South African poetry, music and comedy with Soweto Kinch, Willie Kgositsile, Pieter Dirk Uys and others at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Monday 19 April and can be heard "in conversation" with Andre Brink at Foyles on Wednesday 21 April. She will also take part in panel discussions at the fair itself on buying South African content and on whether British publishing has become risk-averse.

Achmat Dangor and Zakes Mda go on from the Book Fair to events in Birmingham and Leeds.
