The Independent on South African Literature
April 16, 2010
Blake Friedmann clients Imraan Coovadia, Achmat Dangor, K Sello Duiker, Etienne van Heerden, Michiel Heyns, Zakes Mda, Deon Meyer, Marlene van Niekerk, Henrietta Rose-Innes and Ivan Vladislavic are all featured in Andrew van der Vlies's look at literature in post-apartheid South Africa in today's Independent (16 April 2010). The piece is a wide-ranging examination of the diverse South African literary landscape.
The article ties in with next week's London Book Fair for which South Africa is the country of market focus, and which (subject to some volcano-induced changes) will see authors participating in events both at the fair and beyond. The British Library is running a series of South African events, as is the South Bank Centre and Foyles. Volcanic ash permitting, a number of the stars highlighted in van der Vlies's article will be appearing at events that range from discussions of the importance of translation to English to what the 2010 football World Cup means to the South African nation.
